Usually when they die on me out here the motors are open circuited rather than mechanically seized, if you put an ohmeter across the fan terminals you'll get infinite resistance rather than continuity, lubricating the bearings won't help in that case of course.
The bearings being a little stiff and pulling more current through the speed controller / resistor would for sure burn up the resistors though, so if I do just a resistor I lubricate the fan while it's apart anyway, even if it's working fine.
