XWD parts have actually become much more available. I have a 2008 Turbo-X, which is just a cracked out Aero with XWD. I bought it with 68k miles in March 2013, now has 93k miles on it and has had about $6,150 in XWD work done on it in the time I have owned it. All I can say is holy hell did the aftermarket extended warranty pay for itself.
I bought it at the height of parts unavailability. My first issue arose in May 2013 or so, with the front transfer case leaking some green expensive-looking hydraulic fluid. No performance issues but it really stunk when the prop-shaft flung it onto the catalytic converter. In all seriousness I think the seal I needed is now available for $3.11, but Saab Parts North America (SPNA) at the time did not have any serviceable parts available; only whole units. So guess what? Warranty paid for a whole brand spanking new transfer case. Dealer also noted that the prop shaft joint was messed up, threw a new one of those in there too. That was all about $4500.
Then in March 2014 or so, I got the "Service XWD" message on the dash, and the car defaults to FWD (wheel-spin city). I took it in and it was throwing a rear diff clutch solenoid code. That was initially another whole unit replacement, which my warranty approved, but rear diff's were on international back-order. In the time it took for parts to become available (September, 2014) we could purchase the clutch solenoid control module on its own. So they replaced just that part. The bill was about $1650 for that, opposed to $3500 for the whole diff. And that's an eLSD specific part. The 2.0T XWD's have less to go wrong.
