Intermediate shaft bearing service : any BTDT ? Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Fri, 17 Apr 2015 20:17:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone,
My 2008 Aero XWD had a strange vibration since a couple months. Feeled like a bad coil, or a worn driveshaft. More noticeable in second gear (MT6) but always present under heavy load.
Today, while installing the summer tires (yes, winter 2015 was that bad...), I took the time to lift the car on 4 axle stands. With engine running at idle in 6th, I heard a chirping sound from the passenger side front CV half-shaft. Upon inspection, I found that the bearing supporting the intermediate shaft is toasted, and will need replacement.
It doesn't look like a big job from outside, but WIS is showing a VERY big job...
I will need to remove the the transfer case in which the intermediate shaft passes through. And this removal involves removing the main propshaft to the rear diff, draining the gearbox, removing the alternator, the anti-roll bar, the complete engine subframe, etc... That's a LOT of stuff for a bearing I can see and touch quite easily from the wheelwell.
My question is, as you may guess : is this absolutely necessary ? Could I use a puller to remove the bearing from the shaft in situ without dismantling the whole underside ?
If no, then it will be a fun job ! At least, spring is finally here after one of the longest, coldest and darkest winter since I'm in Montreal, 17 years ago.
