Simple mistake with dire consequences Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Sat, 18 Jul 2015 08:59:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
For you out there that tinker with your own cars and maybe buy parts from less than knowledgeable store clerks. I don't know the whole story and it could even be a less than knowledgeable shop or mechanic ordering and installing the wrong spark plugs.
As we all know, NGK is the go to spark plug of choice for Saab and anything else is a crap-shoot of chance taking but still, other manufacturers claim to make one or another suitable spark plug for our cars.
In this Denso brand case, the mistake can be quite easy to make and innocent enough but still very costly in the end.
The 4cyl engine takes Denso IK20 according to their website and the V6 engine takes IKH20 plugs.
This 4 cyl engine had the V6 plugs (IKH20) installed which are about 1/4" longer to fit the V6 engine and it created such a turmoil inside the combustion chamber and most likely higher compression and lean burning pinging and blow torch effect that it destroyed the plugs and engine.
It is just a shame on a great looking 60th anniversary convertible with less than 60K miles to need a new engine for this simple mistake.
