I've set my '01 Aero up so that the fan blows only '2' bars worth, the A/C compressor is in Econ mode, and Recirc is set to off. That way the system comes on in a civilized way. If I want A/C or fast heat, all i have to do is hit the 'Auto" button.
To do this:
1) Have the car running
2) Hit 'Auto' on the ACC control button to get everything in auto mode.
3) Hit one of the fan speed buttons once so that the fan speed is no longer controlled by the ACC unit.
4) Hit the 'Recirc' button once so that the Recirc function is no longer controlled by the ACC unit.
5) Hit the 'Econ' to turn off the compressor
6) Hit the fan speed buttons again, up or down, until there is a low to moderate air flow - set the level you want on startup. This will be the default air flow. I like to have two bars worth showing.
7) Hit the Recirc button, if necessary, to turn off Recirc.
8) Simultaneously press and hold the "OFF" and "REAR DEFROST" buttons. Release.
Finished
Now the system will come on w/o the ac compressor and without lots of rushing air. If you want AC or higher fan speed when in defrost or in heat mode, hit the Auto button. If the car is turned back on after only a 10 minute shut-off, then it will keep the last settings for that drive.
