Purchased the Nov. issue at Borders on Monday. The Saab test vehicle was an Aero, which is programmed to run on premium. It would seem obvious that there would be a downgrade in performance to run an Aero on regular. But what would the difference in performance be for a base 185 HP 9-5 that has a recommended regular fuel grade according to the owner's manual? According to the Car and Driver article, the vehicles that ran premium that were programmed to run regular had a very slight increase in performance, but not enough to offset the 20 cent/gallon additional cost. C/D recommended regular burning cars stick with that grade of gas. Vehicles operating at higher elevations would probably be the exception.
