I live in Denver (5200' altitude) and have noticed that my 2.3 LPT seems to work harder and ping more on 87 octane. My local dealership has also recommended using premium. Their explanation is that knock sensors in the engine limit turbo boost to reduce knock. Due to the fact that the Trionic system's response to knocking is reactive instead of proactive, engine damage can be done. The main reason I stick with premium fuel though is to have full boost capability. One of the joys of owning a Saab is to have full horsepower at altitude! Drive your car over a mountain pass some time and you'll appreciate turbocharging like never before. What a great mountain car! There's a reason Vail and Aspen police departments use them for police cars.
