Yes, it really does cost nearly $2000 to fix this. An indie told me they charge over $1500, that it takes 10-11 hours and it's a huge pain. The cheap interim fix might work for a while.
I love my two Saabs, but this heater situation is insane and could harm the brand. Car heaters and their controls are a technology that's been mastered for about 50+ years. It's something you should never have to think about, let alone pay $2000 to fix on a 6-7 year old car.
You should consider the economics carefully. You may want to get rid of the car.
