1. Mudflaps - The mudflaps for the 9-5 will run you about $50 or so and labor to install would probably be an hour ($75 here in New Jersey). But...if you have even elementary mechanical ability installing these mud flaps is really quite easy - requires that you drill 3 holes in the plastic fender liner behind each wheel and just bolt them on. Must of course turn the front wheels on each side sharply in order to create enough room for the electric drill to do the holes, but otherwise this is really a fairly simple job. Would also point out that the quality level of the Saab oem mud flaps is really top notch. Have four on my 9-5 and they really help re road debris.
2. Hood protector versus Hood Edge Protection Strip - I have the hood protector on our 9-5 and the Hood Edge Protection Strip on our 9000, and for my money the Hood Edge Protector (available in clear or smoke (get the smoke, will not show scratches and looks better re my truly biased opinion!))does a far superior job in protecting the hood. Installation of this accessory is also not all that difficult, but I would advise having a tube of Loc-Tite on hand to apply to the bolts and hardware in order to insure that nothing loosens over time. The Hood Edge Protector has a number of soft plastic pads underneath that prevent the protector from making direct contact with the paint and avoids paint damage.
3. Downside to hood protector - none that I have noted.
4. Leather spills - Get a small bottle of Lexol leather cleaner and just carry it with a clean cloth in your trunk; then when the inevitable spill occurs you can clean it up before it dries and becomes more difficult to remove. Also remember to treat the leather 2-3 times a year with a conditioner such as Lexol Leather Conditioner, Leatherique, or even Neatsfool Oil.
