Even if you could get one to work, it is not recommended. Sucking most of the oil out the top is not as good as letting _all_ the oil, and the sludge, drain out the bottom. It's no big deal to get to the drain plug and you have to make a mess anyway to replace the filter, so why not do the job right?

An oil sucker is fine for a boat engine or other application where you can't reach the drain plug, but it is a make-do solution at best.

There is a system you can install that has an electric pump which draws the old oil out from a banjo fitting which is installed in the bottom of the pan. This works great, from what I have heard, but it's expensive and not necessary.
