A lot of people wouldn't think that it's "natural competition" for the 9-5. The 9-5 is a fine "luxury" European sedan that competes with Volvo, VW/Audi, Acura/Infiniti/Lexus and to some extend BMW and Mercedes, etc. The Saturn was always a cheap American car, though that's starting to change somewhat.
I know that Saturns are actually decent cars these days, as do many people here on TSN and who know cars in general. But a lot people are not going to place it in the same category as a Saab based on its past history and reputation.
Besides, I'd bet that it doesn't drive as nice as a 9-5 (especially Aero). Despite the good GM warranty, I wouldn't think that longevity would be as good. And don't forget about the tuning potential of Saabs!
