largest chance of sale. If the cars were evenly distributed, the large volume dealers would not have enough units, and the slow dealers would have too many cars to sell (not to mention, their floorplanning costs would be outrageously high). Allocation is determined mostly by number of sales.
If a dealer only sold 6 '01 9-5's all year, why give him 10 '02's? If I were a dealer that sold several hundred 01 9-5s, I would be irate if I could only obtain 10 '02 units. This amount wouldn't even get me halfway through the month.
This is why distribution is completed in this manner. Yes, you would have loved to see the Aero at the smaller local dealership, but the larger dealer would have at least ten fold the people interested in an Aero (and five fold buying Aeros). During the first round of orders, Saab reserves Aeros for the smaller dealerships on a 'sold unit basis' only. This allows the higher volume markets help Saab to move the desired number (800 nationally) of vehicles.
I hope this makes sense now.
