Key problem

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem -- my battery is dead this morning. It's (literally) brand new, and I'm thinking the problem may be related to the fact that last night, when I removed the key from the ignition, the car didn't completely shut off -- the radio, for example, kept working. I tried removing the key several different times, but it still wouldn't completely shut off.
So, I turned the radio off and left the car overnight (what else can you do at 10pm). My questions -- do you think that this is what caused the battery to die (despite the fact that the radio was off & no lights were on)? Also, any ideas how to get the key to completely disengage until I can get it into someone to fix? I'm afraid that if AAA comes to get me started, I'll have the same problem if I can't get the key to disengage.
Thanks,
cheryl
