No artificial shortage. We haven't been able to obtain them at this point for several reasons. Mostly due to the fact that the '02 9-5, in most ways, is a new car. Between the delay in release, the small shrinkage in price, and the overall demand, finding or obtaining 9-5's has been difficult (the Aeros in particular).
As far as the Aero goes, no one expected a price tag below $41,000. With the added features (sport seating, heated seats, and a great standard wheel) and the model improvements made for '02, the price is truly a bargain. December, especially, was great ( I was selling Aeros in the sub $35k range! This is less than a 2001 Aero holdover!). For example, the lease payment on an Aero was only $4.ºº higher than a Linear, and was $18.ºº-$20.ºº lower than the Arc! I didn't anticipate the demand for 9-5 Arcs and Aeros as I'm 'Aero-less' and only have one Arc left.
I must admit that the Arc has certainly surprised me this year. With the addition of ventilated seats and heated seats as standard equipment, the Arc is, also, a huge bargain over last year's model. I'm pleased with my 9-5 traffic, and am happy with the extra GM advertising that we have received in the past several weeks. The supply of 9-5's will start to grow in the coming weeks as the third and fourth wave of orders hits US shores. I have two Aeros and an Aero wagon on the horizon, with delivery dates falling within the next two-three weeks.
There is nothing false about the shortage, although theoretically creating a shortage would sound like a brilliant idea. :-)
I apologize for not being around often in the past couple of weeks, but I'm back now. I don't plan on disappearing, again, any time soon.
Cheers,
Brian.
