When we bought our 2001 9-5 we got 30 free minutes. When they ran up I read the pamphlet they inlcuded, which described the various plans, and then called the OnStar help folks, who helped me figure out what would work best.
As I recall one of the decisions you need to make if how long to buy a block of time for. For example, you can get a block of 100 minutes to be used within 2 months for a lot less than 100 minutes to be used over a year. My memory is that we paid about $36 for 100 minutes over 2 months--not a bad deal as far as I'm concerned.
I happen to really like this service. I don't like using my cell when driving as I have trouble dialing and driving, but find that I can concentrate just fine while talking on the remote phone - it's like having someone sitting next to you. And the price, about 30 cents a minute, while not cheap, isn't really that bad. A quick call home telling them where I am headed for less than 50 cents - a steal, imho.
