Similar to you, I went from a 99 to a 2001. In about 2 weeks, I used my free 30 minutes. I will probably re-up for the "I'm on my way home" 2-3 minute call, and in case of emergency. Interestingly, I've also used it as
a backup to my (ditgital) phone because 1) there's a full power 3.0 watt transceiver with Onstar, compared to .6 (?) watt in the handheld, and 2) analog is much more pervasive than digital coverage. Just the other night,
the digital phone was crapping out, I had the other person call me on
Onstar, and we talked for about 10 minutes through some rather rural country side.
It isn't cheap, there's a premium if want the minutes to last more than
two months (if they're unused, they are lost), and you can't "dial" once
a call in connected, so forget about checking voice mail and the like.
I find it safer than mucking with my hands-free set: when a call comes
in, I fumble for the cords, the earpiece/mic; just one button for
On Star. Now, if only Saab would put it where I can see it, and
not behind the steering wheel...
