It was the last car before my Saab 9kt. I've only test driven the 9-5.
Frankly, the 9-5 rates as a better "value" longer term because of all the Saab virtues.
That said, if you're "young" the Bimmer, even a 318i (or iS) is a "sexier" car, at least out here on the west coast.
I really liked my BMW, but performance wise, it is not fast. I had an '89 325 iS and it was a rocket compared to the '94...
The bimmer will handle nicely, it is well balanced, and won't get you into alot of trouble because, it really lacks the power to spin your back-end around.
That said, watch the car in very wet situations, and, get snows on it before going to the moutain. The bmw is reliable.
All that said, you're asking for advice on SaabNet. I love my Saab(s) for different reasons than I liked my bmw(s).
Performance? The 9-5 will kill the 318i in *most* situations, including highway, stop-light fun... Maybe on Mtn. Roads the bmw would get away, but, it would be close.
I agree with Coolnight and others, get the one you like best and can live with.
