my 2000 aero has now 125,000 miles . it could have more but i do have many other cars and do not use this one that often.but i love it and so does my wife.
ok.. now issues over 125,000 miles
trouble free sort of for first 75,000 miles only one failure ,the radiator fan. and some recall issues including the ignition cassette.
igniton cassette has been replaced by myself once . the oe gave me a code and i was on a trip. i ordered one from the web ,got it while in a motel, replaced it myself and when i returned home took it to the dealer but the factory refused to replace the oe one because i had done so before i took it to them and i because i bought it from the web and not the dealer . big deal.
the new one is now giving me a code the same as the oe one but i keep it in place . and i have the oe one in the trunk in case this one fails .the car runs fine in spite of the codes .
then as it aged ........
all engine mounts replaced twice so far
head gasket leak, front cover leak, fixed at cost of 2.5$
burglar alarm failed --fixed
replaced water pump twice as a service item.
loss of headlighs --replaced fuse the big red one . actually i had it re-soldered and still going strong. this site helped me with this repair.
the heat /a/c acted up sending only hot air from one side . my mechanic told me it is a small arm inside the a/c-heat box that broke off
. dealer wanted $ 2,500 to replace the box. my mechanic in florida wanted $1,500 , and i called my mechanic in conn. who advised me that there is a company that makes a new arm, easily replaced for under $ 35,00.
i tried the internet and finally contacted a person ( sorry i forgot his name ,in ft.lauderdale who told me to bring the car over .
in 15 minutes ,at his house ,he fixed the problem by replacing the arm and charged me a very appropiate $ 150.00.
it turns out that this gentleman is the person who developed this fix and now resides in florida.
rear axle causing cupping of rear tires --no rear tire camber adjustment available and rear axle deteriorates and sags with time causing it to affect the camber which in turn causes the tire cupping . only remedy is adding shims to bring the tire camber back on line but still after a new alignement the rear camber is still off.no solution
and last month i felt the engine /tranny was moving back and forth in the car as if it was independent of the chasis----
problem ---the nut or bolt that holds the chasis to the body fell off . it has been replaced and all fine.
some other minor issues like brake rotors and exhaust but to be expected.
replaced exhaust with the viggen exhaust unit . nice sound .
changed oil myself every 3,500 miles with mobil one
changed tranny fluid every 7,000 miles $ to 5 quarts each time as of 15,000 miles to now.
on long trips at approx 85 mph but average of 69.5 mph i get between 29 mpg in summer and 32 mpg in spring /fall.
in winter i get 29 mpg.
driving same car in germany at over 130 mph i find this car has better tracking and holding than beemers and mb at same speed and equal of the old audi A6 which in this respect was better than the newer ones at this speed and over.
with 16 inch winter tires i get an extra 1 mpg
city driving this falls to 13 to 17 mpg. depending on the weight of my foot.
to try to solve the rear cupping problem i am now running my winter 16 inch tires constantly to see if going from the aero 17 inchers to 16 of the regular car may help.???
