Trailer wiring adapter for my '07 Posted by Saabpilot [Email] (#134) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabpilot) on Sun, 25 Dec 2011 14:17:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I know this has been discussed many times but I haven't found any threads specific to the wiring. As we all know, GM deleted the OEM trailer wiring plug on the later model OG 9-5's like my '07.
My project for the holiday weekend was to install a Curt trailer hitch (piece of cake) and to attempt to use a generic trailer wiring converter. I used a Curt model 56146 Powered Tail Light Converter based on the recommendations of the trailer hitch supplier. Using WIS, it was easy enough to locate the proper wires for tail, brake and both turn signals. I ran 12 volt DC from fuse position 1, which ironically is set up for trailer lights and is battery hot. As recommended and is sound electrical practice, I installed an inline fuse close to the converter box.
My trailer is stored in a remote garage and I did not run the car over there to plug it in to the trailer and confirm it works. However, with the converter spliced in I am getting 12 volts DC at each of the three terminals of the 4 position trailer connector. [The 4th is ground and is operating properly.]
This doesn't seem correct. Turning on the tail lights and the turn signals, the voltage on these terminals doesn't seem to change but then again my volt meter may not be sensitive to notice momentary changes in voltage.
Anyone have any experience using these generic wiring converters?
Thanks, as always for any advice anyone can offer. Have a great holiday weekend.
