The auto stethoscope (thanks, Rich02818) was a great idea. That made me about 95% sure it was the alternator. I pulled the belt today and ran the engine briefly - instantly quiet. Belt on - noise right back. Also isolated rough bearings on the alternator turning it by hand. Got a rebuilt Bosch AL0782X on the way. If I think of it later, I'll post a video to the sounds later this week.
