That square thing is a resettable fuse, sometimes called by the brand name Polyswitch, if I remember correctly. It's purpose is to keep the motor from burning up when the wiper blades freeze to the headlight glass. The fuse heats up and breaks the connection when the current is too high, then restores the connection after it cools off.
Somewhere on net, maybe even Saabnet, there are instructions for taking apart the wiper motor and replacing the fuse with an electrically equivalent part. The new part was not a square block like the original, and had to be soldered between the contacts.
