How much do you trust your mechanic?
What you're describing sounds *exactly* like the problem my wife's '02 was having recently. I checked everything I could think of with no luck. Finally took it to my friend's shop... we put it up on the lift, and almost 100% hidden behind the starter was the pressure sensor for the oil light, and it was clear that's where the oil was coming from. Replaced the sensor, no more smoke, no more oil loss!
So I'd ask specifically if he replaced the oil-pressure sensor behind the starter: if the answer's "no", do it.
