Anders,
It's exactly what I was looking for, thanks a lot!
I just installed another new OEM thermostat, performed steps like you had suggested, using infrared thermometer and temp gauge to keep an eye on the engine temperature. Thermostat opened when thermometer showed around 97 degree Celsius over the temp sensor and coolant went down little bit as expected and upper rad hose got hot; few minutes later fans kicked in. There was not overflow. I had my block tester ready and it didn't register any combustion gases. I waited till fans kicked in again and shut off the car. Will replace the expansion cap next.
If overflow continues after new thermostat and cap, it's probably time for the head gasket.
Thanks again for the advice.
