Marc:
Having jacked up my four 9-5s, and a friend two 9-5s more times than I would like to remember what with seasonal tire changes and various maintenance, I never encountered a loose spring in the back. As I recall from installing the Nivomat package, there was not enough tension in the dampers to require a spring compressor either in removal or installation, but there was sufficient tension to keep the spring tight. You should be able to see part 4 because it is plated shiny rather than the black of the damper, but there is not much thickness there as you say. But still, it wouldn’t be there if it was not necessary. Could the springs be a little short? How about checking the condition of #18, the spring support, which should be visible with a good flashlight with the wheel off? Less likely, could the damper top locknut not be sufficiently tightened? I recall when installing the Nivomats, there were many pieces so I had to study the blowup diagram carefully to get them all in the right place with the right side up. Maybe try to grab the spring and shake it with the wheels on and the car on the ground. Just a note that WIS says the top two retaining bolts on the damper assembly only have to be loosened because the damper bracket is slotted on the top, so that means only three bolts have to be removed to get the whole assembly off. Is the bottom damper bushing #2 in place? The damper would have a lot of play without that, but you should be able to try shaking the damper to test that. Sometimes suspension noises can travel through the body and sound like they are coming from somewhere else so make sure the loose springs are not a red herring and the sound might be coming from something like a stabilizer bar link. I though I was hearing clunking in the rear of one 9-5 and it turned out to be the front stabilizer bar links. Good luck.
