I would guess he ended up loosening the adjustment spot for the shift linkage in the engine bay to turn the housing to get access to the switch. It should just need adjusted. There is a plastic plug you remove in the gearbox and if loosen the boot up inside you can get to the holes that are lined up to adjust the linkage. Even without the factory pins a #2 philips screwdriver is often the write diameter to fit in the holes. So the procedure should be a fairly quick adjustment to line the linkage up correctly.
