Europeans favor a beam of uniform intensity across the front of the car, with the pattern having a sharp cut=off and a "break" - ever so slightly below horizontal to the left, rising to the right (Except in England, where it's the reverse). USA beam pattern favors a concentrated splash of light "down the road", but with no sharp cutoff.
The European pattern really shines with Xenon electric arc discharge lighting, IMO. With normal halogens, the total light output is (IMO) inadequate for the spread of the beam.
