We were faced with a similar dilema regarding my '98 Jetta GLX (STILL one of the best 6 cylinders on the market ever!). We fixed car & sold to my nephew, b/c car was getting too small.
I too drove the 6, and loved it. I hated the dash of the 6s, and my wife never warmed to the 6. She does drive a '90 Miata, first production run, and we owned two Protege's (early '90's, b/f they sscrewed up the handling...), so we felt some loyalty to Mazda.
My point is, we ended up w/ a 9-5 Aero wagon, not only because it was the best choice for us, but because it was such a screamin' deal. We hope to get 10 years out of it, and are willing to maintain it.
I agree with the post regarding the possible boredom of the 9-5. what happens when the 3 wears on you? Will you replace it?
I am still somewhat skeptical over the reliability of the Saab, but it is a step up from my Jetta which we loved dearly, and we will drive the 9-5 until our son turns 16 (10 years).
If you are that hungry for a new car, look at the 6 (either i or s), but you could be sorry at the lack of room/power.
Good luck.
