The uniqueness of a car does not promote resale. That is diesel cars haven't had traditionally higher resale in my experience particularly against similar gas models.
The book value of a 3 year old, 2001, 120k Passat (40k per year) is about $4k less than a Saab 9-5 same year same miles. Neither car is gonna' be worth much with that kind of mileage.
Although torque is usually a Saab advantage, I suppose the diesel does very well in this regard, but I've got to imagine that the 220hp of the Arc shines through at higher speeds.
I would hope the higher class of the Saab, the safety, the luxury, the sound system, the exclusivity, the room would win you over.
The novelty of diesels can wear thin. Although diesels are much better now they can still be noisey and smelly at times, have higher maintenance requirements (the Saab is only every 15k and free for 3/36), cost more to repair, and not really last any longer in passenger car operation.
And although the do get better economy, the fuel is more expensive and harder to find, diesels are not as environmentally friendly.
A better comparison to the Passat might be a 9-3 IMO although I'm a 9-5 guy all the way.
