Winter tires for 9-5 Aero Wag. in Northern VA?

I live on a street that sits at the bottom of a hill in Northern Virginia. I commute to downtown Washington, DC each day. Every time it snows more that 1 inch on the ground I can't get my 9-5 Aero Wagon out of the neighborhood!!! Source of much frustration. Still using 224/45/17 tires and rims but switched from the OEM Michelin's to Gislaveds to fix problem to no avail. What do you recommend? While we only get 2-4 small snow storms in the winter, we do get plenty of freezing rain and ice. I also travel to the snowbelt 2-3 times during the winter.
My wife's 9-5 sedan has Gislaveds 225/55/16's and it has no problems getting out. My old 9000 had Dunlop Sports on it and it worked like a charm.
So is this a tire size thing, a winter tire thing, or both? Given the amount of dry pavement driving time in the winter it sounds like I would blitz through the tread on Blizzaks pretty quickly.
Any recommendations and advice are greatly appreciated.
