I have a similar leak on my 87T. At first it appeared to be coming from the bottom cap/nut & was washing back, picking up grime & dripping stained fluid from other areas, but clean fluid dripping directly under rack pinion housing.
After pressure washing entire area it was obvious that leak was coming from top of pinion housing, collecting, then spilling down outside surface of housing & dripping from bottom of housing. It would "seem" that the upper hydraulic seal could be replaced by pulling the steering column univeral joint off, removing the circlip, dust cover and old seal & replace. BUT, all advice I have received, including from this BB, tells me that replacing the seal is not an option, and the pinion shaft itself could be worn in which case a new seal would be ineffective. I also considered tightening the pinion locknut (under the dust cap), or loosening the adjustment screw which might relieve some fluid pressure. BUT, I'M NOT SURE THIS WOULD BE SAFE OR ADVISABLE.
So far I've tried 2 stop leak products. The first, STP, slowed the leak considerably, but it doesn't happen overnight. Its effect is to soften and expand the seals. The 2nd, Valvoline, produced no further improvement. My last resort will be a K&N product which envolves more than simply adding the product to the reservoir.
Again, I've been told that if the stop leak products do not slow the leak to an acceptable level, replacement of the rack is the only solution for this type of leak.
Hope this helps, and if any of you experts out there have a solution, short of replacing the rack, your input would be greatly appreciated.
