That's correct - there is no transmission drainplug in your '92 900. This was an exception to the normally good design practices of the SAAB engineers. I half think it was thought up by the bean counters to keep people dependent on SAAB dealer service when they wanted a change of transmission fluid. The official excuse from SAAB at the time they did this was that since the engine oil and transmission fluid drain plugs were so close to each other on the pre-1990 900s, people were draining trans fluid thinking it was engine oil, then over-filling the engine oil, thus ruining both the transmission (no fluid) and the engine (too much oil). This was about the same time that SAAB started recommending that regular 10W-30 oil be used in both the transmission and the engine, so they thought there might be some confusion on the part of "do-it-yourself" owners. Another case of big brother protecting us from ourselves!!
The SAAB dealers have some sort of vacuum hose that sucks the old trans fluid out through the filler plug. My question - what happens to the little shards of gear metal that always collect at the bottom of the transmission? Do they get sucked up, too, or redistributed throughout the transmission gears to do more damage?
Without a doubt, this was one of the more stupid ideas SAAB ever had.
