air tools are necessary.
When I was a tad, Father wouldn't let me near a 1/2" drive ratchet because I would break off bolts. 3/8" was enough for tightening anything, 1/2" only used for breaking things loose. (Only thing that stopped me was the four point farmer bolts that hold the main bearings in on a Model A Ford engine. THOSE we broke loose with a crescent and a four foot long pipe...)
The worst thing about air tools is the compressors generally used by the home mechanic are mostly inadequate. Almost any of the 110v '5hp' compressors won't give you enough cfm for continuous operation of a 1/2" impact wrench...my Ingersoll-Rand says it takes 4.0cfm@90psi, BUT that's an average...if you look at the operating curve for the thing, it takes
22cfm under some situations. And taking off some suspension bolts falls in that category! To be fair, I haven't tried Sears' new 175psi 2-stage 110v compressor...it seems that might be a fair dinkum with a 20-30 gallong reservoir.
In the meantime, I'm eyeballing a 220v three stage 225psi 80gallon compressor I saw at Price/Costco the other day....I CAN fit it in the Saab hatchback....
