Hi, Peter.
The Saab water pumps have a small relief port through which some coolant normally dribbles -- though it isn't much. If your coolant reservoir is losing coolant (that is, you find you have to add coolant between annual coolant changes) then the likely culprit is the pump. You shouldn't be seeing puddles of coolant from a flow over your crank pulley, though. That's probably an indicator of a bad pump.
Pumps also tend to get noisy when they go bad. The general consensus from the folks on here is that water pumps last anywhere from 40,000 to 80,000 miles if you're lucky.
You =can= replace it yourself. I posted the details from when I did mine last summer, and you can print out the story if you want a do-it-yourself guide. Click above on the "More from Monster" link, then scroll down the list (it's a page back) to November 3rd, and find the post called "My pump story." Read that one, and also read the other posts in that thread.
If you decide to do it yourself, don't worry -- people on this board will be happy to talk you through any trouble you run into.
Good luck!
