It's true that high temperature at idle is usually the thermoswitch, but as stated, it can be the thermostat. If the thermostat is sticky, the extra flow provided by the pump at higher RPM, and the fact that the cooling system just runs more efficiently at higher RPM, can show up as a higher gauge reading. If the the last time the thermostat was replaced was unknown, or if it was of unknown origin, it is *always* my first suspect. Especially since it is a wear item that should be replaced regularly.
