'85 900S rear shocks toast @ 167k, front still passable. Debated between Boge Turbo Gas/Automatic #36081/36082 or Sachs #112102 front w/ Boge #36082 rear. The former is stock, the latter is SPG spec. (What was turbo?) Was seeking a firm, taut ride w/o getting ridiculous. Stock springs. Was cringing at the monetary gamble (buy first, decide if you like later...) but talked into Sachs by Tom Townsend on chat.
The Sachs appear to have twice the volume of the Boge. Obviously can't compare new to old, but nonetheless the result is better than expected. Firm, sporty ride but not over-damped or remotely harsh - the new bushings also help, of course. I winced at the first potholes expecting a firm thumping from these stiffer shocks, but no, the result was pleasing. Small bumps may/may not be felt more, hard to say. The car is however very even-keeled, comfortable, and feels quite confident. Road feel is excellent - the nose hugs the road and has a "determined" feel. Am impressed that "smooth" and "firm" can coexist.
If you want slightly more sporty than 4 Boge's all 'round, you risk little by going this route (except about $50 more). I *can* say it feels more aggressive than the '90 900S when it was young (my '85 has swaybars, too) This is fun!
