I'm in the middle of installing a 9000 turbo (2,0l) in my ´83 900. So I can relay what I have already found.
The engin block and head are the same as in the 900, but the rest of engine is different. But as the engine in your 900 is 16 valve you already have most of the parts you need ready.
Some improvistation is still needed on some issues. I do not know if the 9000 exhaust manifold fits into the 900 (I had manifold and turbo from a 900 so I never looked into this). Maby if you relocate the battery. If not you will need the 900 manifold. If it does fit on the other hand you can have the exhaust (from the turbo back) made at any good exhaust shop.
Using the intercooler from the 9000 will recquire some cuting, but nothing drastic. Many saabers have in fact installed a 9000 intercooler as a performance upgrate to there saabs (check the performance bb for more on this). The intercooler pipes will have to be made by a shop (or yourself if you can weld;).
I do not know what fuel injection system you have in your Saab, (or for that matter what FIS is in the 9000) but you will have to figure out how to wire things up. If both Saabs have the same system (e.g., LH 2.4) things will be alot easier. My 900 had the CIS system and I'm changing it into LH 2.2 for the turbo motor, so I have a lot of wiering to figure out.
If you'd like to know more or have any questions, just drop me an email (click my name above), and I can try to borrow a digital camera and take some pictures for you.
Good luck on your project if you go through with it.
