The issue with the roll-in method is that all it replaces is the chain. The chain rides on a bunch of things (sprocket teeth, chain guides, etc.), and it's unreasonable to assume that only the chain wears. So the roll-in method works, but doesn't address other potential issues in the engine.
Berkeleybull, this isn't to say that what you did had no worth. Obviously the chain was worn. And it has given the engine extra life.
