From your description of the key turning freely without resistance, that tells me the ignition core broke in two. There's an internal and external core part to the ignition assembly. The internal core spins with the key and can only turn when the key is in place and displaces the locking pins (usually around 10 or more) inside the internal core. The bottom of the internal core - a metal probe looking somewhat like the end of a screwdriver with a notch in it - fits into the ignition switch and turns the inside of the switch when the key is turned. The resistance you feel under normal conditions is that switch turning, plus a little from the reverse gear locking mechanism. I've had the internal core snap before and when I pulled the key out the entire core came out with it. That's when I could see the bottom of the core and the prong had sheared apart. I took a good used core from a junk yard and swapped the pins (cleaning the whole lock assembly in the process). But to do any of that you have to be able to remove the shift/ignition console. Other than the three tripod bolts, I don't remember any other nuts or bolts. If there were, it wasn't a problem removing them. I also had both seats removed so I had complete access to every angle of approach. The job can be done with the assmembly unbolted, but still attached to the shift rod running through the firewall to the tranny. That way you can rotate it as you need.
Core removal: There's a pin that you press inward to release the ingition core. The key must also be in the ignition and rotated a few clicks to pull it free once the pin is depressed. Do some searching on this site for that pin location. Some ignition assemblies have a hole pre-drilled and others are sealed and you have to drill through the metal.
