No more 1/2/5/R - Still 3/4 - Any thoughts? Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() |
About a year ago I sold my 1991 900Tc to a really nice guy here in town. He emailed me recently about a problem getting into 2nd gear. I've had similar issues with old fluid, so he came by a couple weeks back and we refilled with Honda MTF. Sitting in the driveway everything seemed good, so I sent him on his way.
He emailed me back this morning to tell me that, while driving, he suddenly lost 1/2/5/R.
Could it be a failed transmission? Possibly. But the transmission has about 15,000 miles on it after being rebuilt by CRS, and when I changed the oil I didn't see much in the way of metal shavings in the oil, so I don't think the thing is falling apart internally.
I'm thinking it might be either the shift coupler or the shifter itself since it seems SO unlikely for a newish transmission to just fall apart. I am nearly certain I replaced the shift coupler when I replaced the transmission, but perhaps not. As far as the shifter goes, my recollection is that 1991 is the cutover year to the "new style" all-metal shifter, so it should have that...
Anyone have any thoughts/ideas/comments about what I'm looking at here? The car is at the other end of town, and I really want to help this guy out but I don't have time to go over there right now and do it first hand. Any suggestions or first-hand experience with these failures - ESPECIALLY the later-style shifter failure - would be very helpful.
Thanks!
