You could also check the signal wire from the ignition back to the tach. The only wiring drawings I have any more are '89 so that doesn't help. Check townsend's site, there's quite a lot of wiring drawings there.
It's an '85 like your username?? IIRC, that's the year with crumbling insulation in the wiring harnesses? A short to ground in the tach signal wire would send your tach to zero.
