Hot runnin 84T

My 84T almost always runs with the needle on the temp gauge approx. horizontal. (I don't know if the later gauges are different but it is within spitting distance of the red danger dash, too close for my comfort). However, whenever I start to get nervous the fan always seems to kick on and lower it a bit, just as it should. So even the though the system seems to be working properly (and I have also tested both the thermoswitch and fan independently) I don't believe my car can possibly be designed to run this hot, since for one thing, my car being without an intercooler, I can notice a significant decrease in boost from when the car is warming up to when its reaches its typical operating temp. Is this simply a case of an old thermostat reacting a little slowly that needs to be replaced or could there be something else afoot? If I do just need a new thermo would it make more sense to get a 82 or 89 deg, since I live in a climate (Maine) where it can be surprisingly hot for 3 months a year and ball-breakingly cold for 4? Or get a summer thermo and a winter thermo? Thanks in advance,
Max
