Hey - it's an 8valve turbo, right?
Couple things to check. I used to have an 83 8 valve that had hot running issues, and I'm trying to remember exactly what was going on, but mine in 90+ degree days had problems ALL the time, so mine was persistent rather than intermittent (yours sounds intermittent, right?) If it was a persistent hot running problem I'd say you might have a fuel issue with the CIS system... but intermittent, I'd check:
1) Check the distributor hall sensor connector. There should be a plug attached to it (this is the hall sensor connector). If this is wiggly at all might be your problem (careful!!! don't break it), somehow heat could aggravate. With car running, slightly fondle it / move it around a bit to see if it causes a stumble
2) Plug wires. Esp wire to the coil on the radiator support. I know... basic... but are they good? If one or two is arcing or degraded, could cause exactly what you're describing.
3) Just before the air box at the bottom of the air intake piece above the radiator fan (on the 8v), there is probably a black plastic box contraption with a "flap" inside... this flap closes when it's cold outside. Sometimes they stick closed, your engine then gets starved for air. I just gutted it, removed the flap.
4) Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Check all the little rubber grommets sticking in the valve cover/intake manifold. If one's cracked, missing, swollen, it might somehow be poping in and out, causing a stall / misfire.
5) There's also some relay that I can't remember what it's called on the 8 valve cars. When car is on and running, I would gently wiggle and tap on each of the relays... both in the main fuse box and that little fuse box labeled ABCDEF in the engine compartment. There are a couple relays in there like fuel pump, enrichment, decel delay ... I don't quite remember my 8 valve days, but some of them can affect performance if they're bad or not properly seated.
Could could could be an oddly intermittent fuel pressure issue but I doubt it based on your post. I seem to recall I once had a bad warm up regulator combined with a very very dirty fuel distribution plate that was giving my engine a way way rich running condition.
Hope it helps. Can you give more info ?
