Upper control arms, unless the car was in a wreck, don't need to be replaced. Maybe if they're bent from hitting a curb or something... You may need upper control arm bushings though... which can cause the wheels to move around. You can check this pretty easily... normally exhaust side is bad 1st due to heat. Look at the 2 rubber bushings where it mounts. Are they cracked, falling out, deteriorated, squished and rotten looking? If so, replace.
You're a brave man doing all that on an 88 8v!
