rough idle, then seems ok?

I started my 85 900S NA this morning normally, but since it took me longer to leave than anticipated, the car was idling for about 10 minutes, then suddenly started sputtering and backfiring (intake rubber was moving...).
I tried to increase the throttle, and after a few tries was able to return to a normal idle.
The tank is full of gas, but it was empty yesterday, added 15 gallons before I got home (about 20 miles after getting gas), and the temp this morning was about 20 degrees F.
Was this vapor lock? something in the gas? Seems ok now - drove to work and back (25 miles) today with no further incidents.
Hope it's ok tomorrow - will be about 0 degrees F!!
thanks.
