Duracool/Envirosafe works very well, my 900 blows gobs of chilled air even on the hottest days. I'm currently working out A/C issues on my 9000 and will be converting that as well.
Since there was a sudden release of pressure from the accident you probably lost a lot of oil. You'll want to drain the compressor, flush the system out, and put in the appropriate amount of oil. The Bentley manual lists system oil capacity as 4.9 oz. (There's probably also a sticker on the car that lists this.)
Normally you would put some oil in the compressor, some in the drier, condenser, and evaporator, maybe even in the hoses. The compressor does not have a sump and relies on the refrigerant to carry oil for lubrication, so the oil needs to be distributed through the system. (Some say you should rotate the compressor by hand 10-15 times after charging to make sure oil is distributed.)
Yes, you do need to pull vacuum on the system to remove air and moisture. If you are in the U.S., Harbor Freight sells an electric 2.5 CFM pump that regularly goes on sale for under $100 and works surprisingly well. There are also cheap venturi-style vacuum pumps available that use shop air, but they take a lot of air and you would need a really good air compressor, a cheap consumer-grade unit would probably burn out from running constantly.
