I've always done all of these jobs from above. I can't imagine doing from below - especially because I don't have a lift.
Yes, it is hard to see what you are doing. I do a lot of it be feel. The oil pump cover should come off easily so if it does not want to come off, you've probably missed a bolt. Keep track of the bolts so you put them all back. IIRC two bolts are not like the "small" cover bolts and the two odd bolts will each be a different length.
You probably have to unbolt the A/C pulley from the main engine pulley to get a wrench on the crank shaft bolt. I ground down a small socket to make the job easier.
The Saab special tools are a big help although I know a lot of folks do it without the special tools.
