I'd recommend taking your oil filter off before starting this, it may be part of the source of the oil that rains down, but anyways, once the pump cover is cracked free from the block, oil starts dripping down and continues for a long time.
I did most of this work from below but cussed a bit. Lay down cardboard or newspapers to catch what you can't get in a pan.
Oil pump cover DIDN't come free easily for me, even with all bolts out. It sits on dowel pins, at 3 and 9 oclock I think, and needed prying gently off them
