If the only problem in the unit was a worn layshaft then one would expect to hear an RPM modulated growl that could be detected in neutral with the clutch engaged BUT, unless the unit was poorly rebuilt, you'll have symptoms of worn out pinion bearings before the worn layshaft makes itself evident. Good rebuilders always replace the layshaft and rear cluster gear needle bearing when they open one of these pre-'1989 units and we open these units mostly because of the first thing that goes bad in them, i.e. the pinion bearings. Even when a unit is run out of oil the pinon bearings are wiped out first and cause the first detectable noise or malfunction. Units from 1989 on have an improved rear cluster gear bearing assembly and their layshafts often show no wear when the pinion bearings need replacing. So to sum up: When the pinion bearings are shot the layshaft is too but the symptom that gets the unit pulled is pinion bearing noise not cluster bearing noise. By the time the layshaft would be worn badly enough to cause real problems the pinion bearings would be on the ground under the car. So unless you have a poorly rebuilt unit (new pinion bearings, old layshaft), the concern is hypothetical. With a virgin or properly rebuilt 5 speed the sympton of a worn layshaft is pinion bearing noise. I hope that's a satisfactory answer to your question.
