Ok, first the vehicle, '93 900TCV, 126K miles. All original except for the top (10 y/o) and head gasket (40K mi). Have replaced the VR about 5-6 years ago. Noticed last weekend that the signals wouldn't flash at night at low rpm and the lights (and esp. brake lights) on. They do light up and at high rpm might give 1-2 flashes then stop. Fine during the daytime, seemingly at any condition so I suspected low current. Got out my multimeter and the idle voltage is 14.1V. Seems a little low (expecting 14.5-14.6) so I'm wondering if it's time for another VR. Is 5 years normal life expectancy? I know voltage isn't the same as amps, but I don't have a Hall probe and really don't want to wing it wiring in my multimeter in line to 85A of DC. I don't hear or feel any wobble in the alternator bushings or pulley. The rubber parts on the car are starting to go though (find one of those CV rear window seals!) and so I can't be certain on the bushings. Will check the ground this weekend (when it warms back up!!!) as I lost the famous tail-light ground just last month. Also lost one of the aux fuse panel fuses in a most unusual manner - the center friable metal was fine, but the "prong" side must have corroded because the plastic was 2X in thickness and all cloudy.
Ahhh, the joys of driving a classic. Thanks all!
