1986 NA - long, general questions

I just put my 1986 na (140k) back on the road after a few years of hibernation. The car is in very good condition overall. What I had forgotten is that the suspension (springs) seem to be very weak (car has new shocks all around), and that the car (motor) has very little power, although it starts and runs fine. It reminds me of dragging brakes when accelerating, but all wheels are free. There is also noticeable vibration felt in the steering wheel while sitting in traffic, although the motor mounts appear to be ok. I have a 1989 rusted out winter beater w/ 250k (+/-) that is much smoother to drive, is quicker, and feels very different when driving. So, I am wondering if what I am experiencing is (simply) the difference in production years? Ie, is there that much difference between these years that the 1986 was a dog right off the assembly line, with an under designed suspension, and vibration isolation issues? It doesn’t seem right that a car that has been well kept should need new springs with 140k. In addition, my cruise control works but does not cancel when hitting the brakes. This does not seem right either. I would appreciate comments from anyone who has owned these model years. Thanks.
